I would like to share feedback regarding my recent experience at RestoBar 101 in Alkmaar, booked through the American Express “Dinner for Two” experience. Unfortunately, this is the second time we have had a disappointing experience using this benefit.
While American Express communicates that card members can spend up to €50 per person, in practice the restaurant provided a preset menu exclusively for Amex guests. We were not offered the option to order from the regular à la carte menu. This made the experience feel somewhat restrictive and different from what is advertised, as it did not allow the flexibility we expected.

More concerning, however, was the level of service. The waiter’s attitude felt unfriendly and, at moments, unnecessarily abrupt — particularly when suggesting drinks and during the ordering process via QR code. The interaction came across as curt rather than welcoming. As Amex members using a promoted benefit, we should not feel as though we are inconveniencing the establishment.
It is worth noting that the food itself was very good. Both the starter and the main course were well prepared and enjoyable — compliments to the chef for delivering high-quality dishes that evening.
However, hospitality is about more than just food. The overall atmosphere and service significantly influence whether guests feel comfortable returning. We often use the American Express dining experiences as a way to discover restaurants we may revisit in the future. Regrettably, due to the service experience, we would not consider returning on this occasion.
I would kindly encourage American Express to ensure that partner restaurants uphold a consistent and welcoming standard for card members, so that the experience truly reflects the premium service associated with the brand.
